After Goldenman's Revenge, the Jane Hoop Elementary film franchise has moved up from one-year to a two-year window.

Chris Weitz was chosen to direct The Magic Ball film after Francis Lawerence, director of Goldenman's Revenge, confirms that he would not be returning as director for the fourth installment due to him working on another film project, Constantine. Steven Spielberg, Drake Jones and Derek Todd all returned as film produces, and Brian Clark back as a film writer. It is Spielberg's final time producing the Jane Hoop Elementary films.

In concluding the film franchise, we feel like that Jane Hoop Elementary: The Magic Ball is the darkest chapter that I have ever written yet, so this movie should be very big.

— Rita Christensen about the film. June 25, 2004.

After wrapping up filming Goldenman's Revenge, Clark announced that he began working on writing the scripts for The Magic Ball in late 2003. He reacts on how the franchise of the Jane Hoop Elementary books has significantly grown to be more on the dark side rather than keeping the series on a family friendly side stating: "We see the growth of the community of the series has grown out of it's roots. In this chapter, there will be a lot of major changes with the story, background history and the characters to make it more a grown up and more serious version of the children literature." He also states that this film not only is combined as a superhero film, but also involves magic making this brand as a "superhero fantasy film" stating: "This one we see more magic stunts, than we did in superhero stunts, which would make this one even more epic than the first three movies".
